Last week, a local fire district responded to a hazardous materials release at a nearby manufacturing facility.  Units from surrounding areas were dispatched to provide mutual aid.  The media was notified, social media sites were updated and an emergency notification callout was initiated—or so emergency managers thought.

IPAWS Releases List of Interested Vendors

FEMA's Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) has made public a list of organizations that have signed up to test their technologies with IPAWS-OPEN, the tool FEMA has built to manage the flow of messages through the IPAWS system.

PBS Announces "Next-Gen EAS" Pilot Using Mobile DTV

Later this year, PBS will begin testing a next-generation emergency alert system designed to deliver multimedia alerts (video, audio, text, and graphics) to mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and in-car navigation systems.

In an online webinar yesterday, Manny Centeno, Program Manager for the FEMA IPAWS Program Office, provided an overview of lessons learned from EAS tests conducted in Alaska.  These tests were conducted as precursors to a proposed national EAS test expected late this year.  A national EAS test has never been conducted.
